Chapter Seventeen

The next thing I knew, I stood in a dark room. The voice continued to speak, only softer now, and gentle. The gruffness and temper had left.

“Welcome home, my daughter.”

His voice cooed, soft and gentle, and spoke ubiquitously without a source. I felt pulled forward. A dim light shone on a walkway.

“How I’ve longed for the one who got away. The bones of my bones,” it spoke over my shoulder.

“Who are you?” I called out.

I turned to see nothing. Nothing but darkness. I was alone in an empty void.

Whatever it was, the shadows hid it well. The ground shook in front of me. Lights blinked one by one. Before me, eight carved stone statues glowed from underneath. As I approached, an ominous song began. First low, with one voice, and then slowly escalated as more voices joined one by one in a chorus.

“Yes, that’s it, my daughter. Approach your destiny. Only you can open it.”

I tried to ask what he meant, but my lips only quivered. It froze me where I stood. I tried to turn back. My boots stuck to the floor. I desperately struggled to move my arms, but a force held me in place as if a weight held me down from my shoulders. The statues’ eyes smoldered red. The voices got louder and louder.

“Fulfill your role, your birthright! Open the door!” the voice shouted.

I begged to understand, but my throat squeezed silent. Not a peep, Not a sound came from my lips. The jaws of the statues opened, and the song blared in stereo all around me.

“Open the door. Fulfill your duty. This is our calling, our victory. It is yours; take it. We will serve justice. Do it. Do it now.”

The song grew louder, drowning out all my thoughts. Darkness poured from the mouths of the statues like water. I could feel it grip my ankles and climb my legs. I was drowning. My body desperately shrugged and shook, trying to be free in this weight. It strangled my waist, wrenching it tight. Tears poured from my eyes.

“Open the door quickly. Come to me. You’ll be safe,”

My head shot upwards pulled like a fish dangling from a hook. I couldn’t look down. The muck rose and crawled up my skin. I felt it creep and rise to my collar.

The ichor whipped from my neck, splashing to my lips. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t breathe. My lungs gasped for air. The sludge yanked my chin down. Finally, it reached my face. It trickled up my cheeks. I screamed, but not a sound escaped my lips. The darkness consumed me whole.
